Italian developer 7 Seas Med has applied for permission to build a 250MW floating wind project in the Strait of Sicily off the coast of Italy.
The company is seeking a 30-year maritime state concession for a 5km-square site located 37km off the coast of Marsala.
The developer wants to deploy 25 10MW turbines mounted on semi-submersible TetraSpar floating foundations.
The project will be located in average water depths of 270 metres and will feature a floating offshore substation, according to planning documents.
It will feature a 41km export cable that will make landfall in the Port of Marsala.
The developer has estimated the cost of the project at €740m and could start construction in 2023.
Planning documents show the Sicilian ports of Palermo and Augusta are under consideration as possible construction bases for the project, which will be served from a long-term operations and maintenance base in either Marsala or Augusta.
