JFE Engineering has secured a contract from Kajima to manufacture and transport monopile foundations for an offshore wind project off the coasts of Oga, Katagami and Akita in Japan.
The company said the scheme, led by Oga–Katagami–Akita Offshore Green Energy, will be the first domestic project to feature Japanese-made monopiles and is scheduled to be the earliest operating round under the country’s offshore wind promotion law.
Manufacturing will take place at JFE’s Kasaoka monopile facility in Okayama Prefecture, which is the only such production base in Japan, according to the company.
JFE Engineering added that it will produce and ship 21 monopiles and transition pieces between January 2026 and March 2027, using heavy steel plate developed for large-scale foundations.
The company said the plant can stably mass-produce around 50 ultra-large monopiles annually and is supported by dedicated storage capacity and a transport vessel.
JFE Engineering stated that it aims to support offshore wind projects from design through to delivery as part of efforts to strengthen the domestic supply chain and contribute to Japan’s carbon-neutral goals.
