LS Cable & System has signed a memorandum of understanding with KEPCO E&C to cooperate on floating offshore wind power.
The company said the agreement establishes a design-linked cooperation model combining its submarine cable technology with KEPCO E&C’s EPC capabilities.
It added that both parties will jointly participate from the initial engineering phase to optimise power grid and cable systems.
Floating offshore wind requires advanced technology to manage electrical performance, mechanical loads and fatigue in continuously moving marine environments.
LS Cable & System has developed Korea’s first dynamic submarine cable to address these conditions.
Only a few global firms, including LS Cable & System and companies in Europe, possess ultra-high voltage dynamic cable technology.
KEPCO E&C has strengths in integrated mechanical and electrical design based on experience in onshore power plant EPC projects and marine environment analysis.
Demand for floating systems is increasing as offshore wind development moves into deeper waters beyond coastal areas.
Projects are expanding in Europe and Japan, with large-scale developments also under way off Ulsan in Korea.
“In floating offshore wind power, participation in the design phase determines whether orders are secured,” said an LS Cable & System official.
“We will strengthen our global competitiveness together with our subsidiary LS Marine Solution based on turnkey capabilities encompassing design, manufacturing, construction, operation, and maintenance.
