MHI Vestas has confirmed that it will supply turbines to the 48MW second phase of the Kincardine floating offshore wind farm off Scotland.
The deal for V164-9.5MW machines, first reported in the subscriber-only newsletter reNEWS, is with Spanish developer and construction company Cobra Group, part of the ACS Group.
Turbines will be installed on Windfloat semi-submersible foundations in water depths of 60-80 metres.
Installation is scheduled for spring 2020 and the contract also includes a 10-year service and maintenance agreement.
MHI Vestas said the project will be the first floating wind farm in the world to feature turbines over 9MW.
MHI Vestas chief executive Philippe Kavafyan said: “We are exceptionally proud that the world’s largest floating offshore wind park will feature the V164-9.5MW turbine.
“Bringing our technology and experience to Kincardine in Scotland advances our leadership in floating offshore wind and confirms our long-term commitment to commercial scale, floating offshore wind projects in the future.”
The company said that it expects to learn a great deal from the project, enabling a better understanding of installation and commissioning techniques, main component interactions and power production.
Kincardine is located 15km southeast of Aberdeen Bay. The first phase, already installed, features a single Vestas V80-2.0MW turbine.
