Portuguese fabricator ASM Industries has won a contract to supply two foundations for Windplus’ 25MW WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind farm off the northern coast of Portugal.
The company said work is already underway, with delivery scheduled for June 2019.
WindFloat Atlantic will comprise three semi-submersible triangular floating platforms installed with 8.4MW turbines.
It is expected to come online in 2019 and will use technology developed by Principle Power, ASM said.
ASM Industries chief executive Adelino Costa Matos said: “A clear victory for our strategy to position ASM Industries among Europe’s leading suppliers of steelworks for the energy sector, including wind towers, offshore foundations and marine structures.
“At this stage we are investing a total of €40m in two new units in Setubal and Aveiro to serial manufacture offshore structures, because as we know it is a strategic area with potential to be explored.
“This project should be seen as a unique opportunity for our country to gather the skills, infrastructures and know-how in the fabrication of structures for the ocean sector.”
Spanish joint venture UTE Navantia-Windar is building the third foundation for the project.
