Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract by Chinese company Dongfang Electric Corporation to supply cables for the latter’s new 10MW offshore wind turbine prototype, which will be installed at China Three Gorges Corporation’s Xinghuawan wind farm.
The wires will be manufactured at Prysmian’s factory in Tianjin for the project, which will be located in Fujian province.
Prysmian said the turbine is the first of its type in Asia and is developed for the offshore wind areas along China’s southeast coast.
It is a direct-drive permanent-magnet unit, which is able to resist 77 metre a second typhoon winds and has a 185-metre blade diameter.
Each turbine can generate 4 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year.
Prysmian Group energy business senior vice president Francesco Fanciulli said: “We are very proud to take part in the increasingly strategic transformation of the wind power industry.”
