Two pieces of unexploded ordnance have been discovered at the construction site of the 400MW Rampion offshore wind farm off England’s south coast.
Eon said today that a 500 metre exclusion zone has been set up around the find.
“As with other offshore wind farm developments, unexploded ordnance surveys have been undertaken across the Rampion construction area. Two unexploded items, possibly from WW2 or earlier have been found within close vicinity of each other within the offshore site,” a spokeswoman said.
“Safety remains our highest priority and experts are currently determining the best course of action. Local people should not be concerned and offshore construction is unaffected by this find.”
Offshore construction kicked-off last month on the project some 13km off the Sussex coast. MPI jack-up Discovery has completed installation of seven SIF-made monopile foundations.
Rampion is being developed by Eon, the UK Green Investment Bank and Canadian energy company Enbridge. It will feature 116 MHI Vestas V112-3.45MW turbines.
