Second consultation opens on Spiorad na Mara

Northland

The second phase of public consultation on the proposed 900MW Spiorad na Mara offshore wind project in Scotland began today.

The month-long process started when the online consultation room went live on the project website.

The proposed wind farm is set in an area approximately five to 13 kilometres off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis (pictured).

The project would have up to 65 fixed-bottom wind turbines, with a potential total capacity of around 900MW. This would meet the average annual electricity needs of around 1.2 million Scottish homes and save more than 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Spiorad na Mara is a Scottish Gaelic expression meaning Spirit of the Sea.

The project is owned by Northland Power (75.5%) and ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading on the development, construction, and operation.

The developers have pledged to carry out two public consultation phases before submitting consent applications. The first phase of consultation took place in September and October 2024 and this is the second phase.

In addition to the online exhibition, the developers are also hosting five in-person consultation events across the Isle of Lewis this week.

Information clinic appointments, for individuals or small groups who wish to further discuss specific aspects of the project, will be available from 9 June to 13 June.

Both the online consultation room and the in-person events provide information about the project and its current status and allow for feedback to be gathered.

The deadline for submitting feedback online is 2 July 2025, the day the online consultation ends.
