Siemens Gamesa staff start offshore risk training

Siemens Gamesa staff start offshore risk training

Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business unit has started training with DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DSS) in order to develop greater risk awareness to improve safety.

DSS has previously worked with Siemens Gamesa’s onshore team and will now implement DuPont Risk Factor training across the organisation for the 6000 employees in the offshore segment.

The training will also include group leadership coaching for 275 senior and middle management staff, as well as a number of safety in engineering design workshops.

The project is currently ongoing with no interruptions because of Covid-19, as the work was designed to be delivered remotely leveraging digital technologies.

Markets in more advanced stages of economic recovery have been prioritised, such as China.

The Siemens Gamesa LeadSafe project, as the activities are collectively known, kicked off with a pilot project at the end of 2019 after an initial assessment of the organisation’s safety culture by DSS to customise training.

The project involves most of the staff working at the company’s manufacturing sites, offices, pre-assembly locations and installation personnel.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit chief executive Andreas Nauen said: “Safety is our choice in Siemens Gamesa and we are proud to collaborate with DSS in providing our employees with tools to prevent incidents by managing risks.

“Our number one focus is always safety because we place safety above anything we do. We want to ensure that all employees have the right mindset about their decision-making every day. That is what LeadSafe is intended to help us in achieving.”

The first management seminar has already taken place, focusing on the role leaders play in influencing and achieving a shift in culture.

One participant said: “Culture changes one conversation at a time. You need to speak about safety to motivate people and give and ask for feedback.”

DSS is also training a select number of Siemens Gamesa employees to become internal trainers for the organisation.

DSS Managing Director Europe and North Africa Cedric Parentelli said: “The key to first class safety performance is safe behaviour.

“Although technical measures can significantly reduce the number of accidents, they are not sufficient to eliminate them.

“That requires sensitizing people to risks and making them aware of the role that their decision making plays in incidents.

“With the new safety project, Siemens Gamesa Offshore is taking a significant step in this direction.

“As an additional clear sign of their commitment to Safety, Siemens Gamesa Offshore is currently defining the scope of work, aiming to extend the current safety project to the rest of the group business units: Onshore and Services, and is also introducing some transversal/corporate actions.”
