Smulders Projects has won a deal to assemble suction bucket jacket foundations for Vattenfall’s 92.4MW Aberdeen Bay wind farm off Scotland.
The deal awarded by balance of plant contractor Boskalis was first reported in August last year by subscriber-only newsletter reNEWS.
Smulders Projects will tackle the job at Wallsend near Newcastle in England’s north east after securing the yard from OGN Group last year.
Vattenfall said the contract will safeguard around 35 jobs and create a further 105 positions.
A total of 11 foundations will be assembled at the yard.
Aberdeen project manager Adam Ezzamel said: “This latest contract award follows successful trials of the game-changing buckets and as a leading fabrication specialist for the wind sector, we’re pleased that Smulders will be carrying out the assembly work in Newcastle.”
Smulders Projects said it will use the north east yard to fabricate the “lower part” of the jackets and to complete all final assembly.
Deputy managing director David Muylaert said: “We are convinced that with expanding our production platform with this new facility in Newcastle upon Tyne, we not only added local content in the UK and an additional production capacity within the Smulders group, but also have created an excellent base close to the renewable and offshore market within the UK.”
