Steelwind joins Hornsea 1 crew

German fabricator Steelwind Nordenham is to supply 20 transition pieces to Dong Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea 1 offshore wind farm off the UK’s east coast.

Under the terms of the deal, Teesside outfit Wilton Engineering Services will carry out a portion of the work including outfitting, coating and load-out.

Wilton Engineering will outfit the 240-tonne transition pieces with boat landings, internal platforms for cables and other electrical equipment and platforms.

It will also provide the hardware with a cathodic protection system and coating to deal with the marine environment.

The work will create up to 150 jobs within Wilton Engineering and the local supply chain, the UK company said.

Hornsea 1 director Duncan Clark said: “We are delighted to be working with Steelwind again and it’s great to see UK firms like Wilton Engineering build their capabilities to supply the offshore wind industry.”

Steelwind managing director Ralf Hubo said: “This contract is the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership with Wilton Engineering, who we have worked with before and know will deliver good quality services on time.”

Wilton Engineering chief executive Bill Scott said: “We congratulate Steelwind for having the vision to create a collaborative platform which will see our two companies utilise our specialist capabilities to the benefit of the project.”

Dong previously contracted Bladt Industries to supply 96 transition pieces for Hornsea 1.

Teesside company Offshore Structures Britain’s – a joint venture between Bladt and EEW – will manufacture 56, with the remaining 40 structures fabricated at Bladt’s Aalborg facility in Denmark.
