The president of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen is to initiate policy to add a further 10GW of offshore wind capacity off the Asian island between 2026 and 2035.
Tsai made the announcement today during a speech at the inauguration of Orsted’s 120MW Formosa 1 phase two offshore project (pictured).
The president said she would ask Economic Affairs Minister Shen Jong-Chin to formulate a regional development policy for offshore wind power as soon as possible and propose the new 10GW goal for the next 10-year period.
Taiwan already has a target of 5.7GW of offshore wind by 2025.
Tsai added that Taiwan wants to attract more overseas companies active in offshore wind to set up operations on the island, as well as boost the domestic supply chain.
She said the aim is for the island’s industry to become a “link in the international green energy supply chain and market Taiwan products worldwide”.
