Eleven people injured on Tuesday when crew transfer vessel World Bora collided with a freighter while on its way to Iberdrola’s 350MW Wikinger wind farm remain under observation in hospital, the Spanish utility-developer said on Wednesday.
Six of a total of 15 crew sustained heavy injuries and were taken to hospital on Tuesday after the accident off the port of Sassnitz in the German Baltic Sea. A further five also spent the night in medical care after being examined by doctors, Iberdrola added.
“In principle, none of the injuries seem to be life threatening. Iberdrola continues to monitor conditions and will issue a fresh update should relevant information become available,” the company added.
Of the 15 people on board, nine were employees of Siemens Gamesa, two were employees of Iberdrola and the remaining four were crew.
The World Bora collided with the freighter Raba at about 7.40am local time Tuesday about 2.5 nautical miles off the coast of Rugen, but did not sink and was able to return to the port of Sassnitz nearby. Nobody aboard the Raba was injured.
Lifeboat crew from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service performed medical treatment on the injured people until doctors arrived.
The injured were transported to hospital via either ambulance or helicopter.
“Iberdrola wishes to thank the rescue services for their diligence and professionalism,” the company said.
Officials in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have started the investigation into the cause of the accident.
