RWE has been declared the provisional winner of the only lease area sold in the US’s first auction of offshore wind acreage in the Gulf of Mexico.
The company made a bid of $5.6 million for the 102,480-acre site OCS-G 37334 Lake Charles offshore Lousiana. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management estimated that is has a potential capacity of 1240MW of offshore wind energy capacity.

RWE’s bid included a commitment to invest over $860,000 in workforce training and a domestic supply chain, and more than $430,000 for fisheries compensatory mitigation.
The other two lease areas, Galveston I and II, both offshore Texas, received no bids in the auction, which lasted two rounds.
