Vattenfall has kicked-off scoping work on the newly-named 1.8GW Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind farm off the Norfolk coast.
The Swedish developer said pre-planning assessments on the project – located in the Round 3 East Anglia zone – have already begun as it looks to hit a 7GW operational offshore target by 2025.
A planning application via the Planning Inspectorate’s nationally significant infrastructure projects scheme is due to be filed next year. A consent decision is expected during 2019.
Pre-planning on a separate 1.8GW offshore wind farm, the Norfolk Boreas, will start next year, Vattenfall added.
Vanguard project manager Ruari Lean said: “Vattenfall wants to work with Norfolk to capture the benefits of offshore wind. There is an opportunity for Norfolk business and securing Norfolk jobs. There is also an opportunity to make a telling impact in the UK’s contribution to tackling climate change.”
Project director Andy Paine added: “As the industry grows costs will fall; that’s why offshore wind has a great future in the UK. An industry is emerging in Norfolk and we are convinced that the region is well placed to secure an even bigger role in the sector.”
