Victoria will open its first offshore wind auction in August 2026 with a 2GW request for tender.
Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio (pictured) said the move progresses the state’s offshore wind industry to deliver cheaper and more reliable power.
Australia’s energy ministers provided in-principle support for the electricity services entry mechanism in December, according to the minister.
Work continues with industry and the Commonwealth to finalise the design of the mechanism and Victoria’s auction process.
The government said harnessing Victoria’s offshore wind resources will diversify and stabilise power supply as coal-fired generators retire.
The state added that record renewable energy investment is helping maintain the lowest wholesale electricity prices in the country.
The offshore industry is expected to create over 6000 jobs and generate billions in investment.
Gippsland will host the country’s first offshore wind projects.
“‘We want to give industry the certainty it needs to invest and help us keep building the renewable energy Victoria needs to push down energy bills,” said Lily D’Ambrosio.
“We’re working closely with developers on the progress of this exciting auction to ensure strong competition to secure the best projects and best value for Victorians,” added D’Ambrosio.
“We’ve always said Victoria will host the country’s first offshore wind industry and that’s why Victoria pushed for the ESEM to accommodate technologies including offshore wind,” stated D’Ambrosio.
