Danish company Orsted has officially opened the 659MW Walney 3 offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
The 87-turbine array is the largest operational offshore project in the world, displacing UK-rival London Array.
Walney 3 is co-owned by Danish pension funds PKA and PFA with 25% each.
It features 40 MHI Vestas 8.25MW turbines and 47 Siemens Gamesa 7MW machines.
Construction of Walney 3 (pictured) was coordinated from Orsted’s west coast hub at Barrow, which will also host the operations and maintenance team.
UK managing director Matthew Wright said: “The project, completed on time and within budget, marks another important step towards Orsted’s vision of a world that runs entirely on green energy.”
MHI Vestas chief operations officer Flemming Ougaard said: “This is a very proud day for MHI Vestas Offshore Wind. We are exceptionally pleased to have partnered with Orsted to supply 40 of our V164-8.25 MW turbines in service to the UK’s latest clean energy achievement.”
