Wikinger stays local for O&M base

The Rostock office of Goldbeck has won a contract from Iberdrola to build the  operation and maintenance base for the 350MW Wikinger offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

Goldbeck will be responsible for the design, planning and construction of the new building, with work due to commence following the grant of formal approval, which expected in the coming weeks.

The two-storey building and the attached warehouse will be located in the Port of Sassnitz-Mukran and will become the operational hub for Wikinger in 2017 when the project is fully commissioned.

Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Germany managing director Jürgen Blume said: “This will be the first wind farm operations and maintenance base constructed in the port of Sassnitz-Mukran and will be designed considering best practices related to energy efficiency and respect to environment.

“The O&M base is comprised of an office area and a warehouse area. The warehouse area primarily serves as a place to store the spare parts and tools that will be used to maintain the wind farm.

“The office area will serve as the hub for the site management team who will monitor and control the wind farm on a day to day basis.

The office area also provides welfare facilities (changing rooms, canteen etc.) for the technicians who will travel offshore to service the windfarm.”

Goldbeck Rostock branch manager Volker Huber said: “As a regionally based company, we are looking forward to involvement in the Wikinger project.

“The building will have a state-of-the-art control room, office and meeting facilities and will also have a photovoltaic on system on the roof. This will be an energy efficient building for a green energy project.”
