Industrialising the manufacturing of current turbine technology rather than jumping to a new model too quickly will help cuts offshore wind costs, WindEurope 2025 has heard.
Siemens Gamesa offshore chief Marc Becker (pictured: right) told delegates in Copenhagen that the sector already has the technology it needs.
He said the company has orders for 1000 units of the 14-15MW machine it offers, which has prompted it to standardise all of its factories to produce the required blades and nacelles.
Becker said the German-owned company is “fully focused” on the platform to industrialise manufacturing which will lead to efficiencies.
He said no offshore wind turbine has ever had orders for more than 1000 units, which will help unlock savings.
He said those savings may even be deeper than expected.
RWE’s offshore wind business boss Sven Utermohlen agreed, saying engineering equipment such as pile grippers need to be used again and again to drive down costs.
“We can only do that if we keep product cycles longer and industrialise”, he said.
