ABO Wind has pulled out of developing the Allt Carach Wind Farm at Kilmorack near Beauly in the Scottish Highlands.
The German wind developer said after carrying a series of test that low wind speeds mean it is not commercially viable.
The development was set to encompass up to 25 turbines generating electricity that would have connected directly to the recently upgraded Beauly-Denny transmission line.
ABO said: “We began investigating the site in 2012 and have followed normal procedures to establish whether it would be a good location for an onshore wind energy development.”
The company put up an 80-metre met mast on the site to measure the wind resource and it was from the results of this year-long monitoring that the unexpectedly poor wind speeds were identified.
ABO said: “We had looked at various wind data which suggested this could have been an ideal site for a wind farm. We are therefore very surprised that we recorded consistently low wind speeds.”
The developer said the decision “is in no way related to the recent changes to renewables subsidies announced recently by the UK government”.
