ABO Energy is considering expanding beyond its traditional role as a renewables developer to build and operate its own portfolio of wind, solar and battery storage projects.
The Wiesbaden-based company said becoming an independent power producer would allow it to create more tailored offers for large energy consumers, supported by its experience in power purchase agreements.
Managing director Karsten Schlageter said: “We have been successful as a ‘pure play’ project developer for around 30 years – now is the right time to consider expanding our value chain.”
He added that the company’s 34GW pipeline and in-house expertise placed it in a strong position to create a structured portfolio capable of participating in the electricity market with baseload offers.
ABO Energy noted that market conditions in Germany have shifted, with approved wind capacity rising from 1.9GW in 2019 to 14.1GW in 2024.
Schlageter said this makes it more attractive to retain and operate projects rather than sell them all.
The company acknowledged that significant financial resources would be needed to establish a sizeable portfolio and said it is in talks with potential investors.
Initial discussions indicated that some partners may seek shareholder rights as part of any commitment.
Schlageter added that founder families Ahn and Bockholt have signalled willingness to sell shares if required, which could lead to a conversion of the company back into a public limited structure.
