US developer Apex Clean Energy has filed for local approval for the 300MW Timbermill wind project in eastern North Carolina.
The up to 105-turbine scheme spans parts of rural Chowan and Perquimans counties on a 17,000-acre site. About half the turbines are proposed on land managed by timber producer Weyerhaeuser.
Turbines under consideration include the Vestas V136, Acciona AW132, GE 3.4MW-137 and Gamesa G126 and G132 machines, according to a conditional use permit application.
Chowan County will consider the application at a public hearing on 22 and 23 August.
Apex also plans to acquire several federal and state approvals, including a North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality wind permit and sign-off by the Federal Aviation Administration, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
The wind farm will connect to the grid through a 230kV transmission line that runs through the site.
Timbermill is slated to be operational during the fourth quarter of 2018, subject to regulatory approval and any weather delays, said Apex.
