Brazilian company WEG has announced plans to build 2.1MW wind turbines at its Hosur plant in India.
The announcement also marks the company’s entry into the Indian wind energy market.
The 35,000 square metre factory employs 490 people and has capacity to absorb production of up to 250MW a year.
It will produce nacelles, generators and hubs, with the first turbines supplied from 2018.
WEG said it will also start commercial activities to capture supply contracts and develop local suppliers.
WEG India managing director Swapnil Kaushik said: “The modular design of our manufacturing complex allows us to expand the company with reasonably low investments, in this case limited to certain devices and tools specifically used in the manufacture of wind turbines.”
