US outfit Northern Power Systems (NPS) has agreed to sell its utility wind assets to Brazilian engineering company WEG.
Under the agreement, the utility-scale direct drive technology developed and deployed so far by both NPS and WEG will be solely owned by the latter and its affiliates.
The assets, which become part of WEG, include the related patent portfolio for utility wind greater than 1.5MW and the engineering team responsible for developing the technology.
The engineering team will remain based in Vermont and will work alongside the Brazilian-based wind engineers to continue product development work, the company said.
The companies started working together in 2013 and plan to continue collaborating.
WEG will focus on utility scale wind and NPS on distributed energy solutions, including distributed wind.
