CWP Energy has started construction at the 308MW Sanquhar 2 wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, Scotland.
The 44-turbine project has been progressed to financial close following the UK government’s decision last month to scrap plans for zonal electricity pricing, according to the developer.
The wind farm will feature Vestas V162 EnVentus turbines. The OEM’s frontrunner status to secure the deal was first reported in the subscriber-only reNEWS in February 2025.
Jones Bros has been appointed to lead on the civil engineering scope.
Sanquhar 2 represents an £800m investment over its 40-year operational life and will provide substantial community funding, CWP Energy said.
About 100 workers are currently on site, with numbers expected to rise to 200 during peak construction.
Rod Wood, director of CWP Energy, said: “Onshore wind is one of the cheapest forms of home-grown electricity, delivering consumers and businesses excellent value for money. We’re delighted that after nearly 10 years of careful planning, ground has been broken and the construction of Sanquhar 2 is now underway.”
Scottish secretary Ian Murray said the project “demonstrates Scotland’s vital role in delivering the UK government’s clean power mission”, while Scottish energy secretary Gillian Martin added it will “help secure our country’s future as a renewables powerhouse”.
Vestas senior sales director James Ian Robinson added: “Sanquhar 2 marks another important step toward greater energy security through home-grown power generation in the UK.”
Jones Bros chairman Huw Jones said almost half the workforce is drawn from the local area.
