Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy have completed construction of the Armow project, the duo’s fourth wind farm in Ontario.
“The project is now supplying 180MW of clean energy to the grid – enough to power 70,000 homes,” said Samsung spokesman Tim Smitheman.
General contractor AMEC Black & McDonald installed 91 Siemens SWT-2.3MW-101 turbines. Armow, which achieved commercial operation on 7 December, employed more than 200 workers during construction.
“The wind towers and blades were manufactured by our partners here in Ontario and helped support over 750 local manufacturing jobs,” said Smitheman.
The wind farm is part of a 1369MW renewable energy portfolio. Samsung’s C$5bn Green Energy Investment Agreement (GEIA) with the province includes 1069MW of wind projects and 300MW of solar.
A pair of 100MW proposals rounds out Samsung’s pipeline. Siemens is on tap to supply about 88 SWT-3.2MW-113 turbines to Belle River and North Kent 1.
Provincial regulators are reviewing a renewable energy approval (REA) application for Belle River. Operation is expected to start in summer 2017.
North Kent 1 has started the REA process and the proponents aim to bring the final GEIA wind farm online in late 2017.
