Enel Green Power’s 54MW Melowind facility in Uruguay has reached full production capacity less than two months after the field was put into service.
On October 27, full production of 54MW was achieved with fully operational wind turbines at the site, 320km from the capital Montevideo.
The wind farm can produce 200m kWh annually and has a 47% capacity factor.
EGP’s country manager Jorge Cernadas said: “Uruguay adjusts perfectly to Enel Green Power’s growth strategy, because it is undergoing full growth both in terms of economy and of population, and has abundant natural resources and a solid legal frame work”.
Uruguay, unlike its bigger neighbours, Brazil and Argentina cannot rely on traditional fuels such as oil and fossil fuels for electricity generation and its hydropower potential is almost completely saturated.
Backing by successive governments since this course was chosen in 2008 and the approval of the “National Energy Policy 2030” plan in 2010 has increased the use of local resources and participation of the private sector in energy generation.
