Engie has acquired a 212MW onshore wind project in Bad Berleburg in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The company said the construction-ready project comprises 32 turbines developed by WestfalenWIND and construction has already started.
Engie said full commissioning is expected by 2027, generating around 500,000MWh of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 142,000 households.
The deal also includes project rights for additional sites currently in development.
Engie said the acquisition strengthens its commitment to advancing the energy transition in Germany and underscores the market’s strategic importance.
Engie Germany renewable energy board member Anne Bosser said: “We are pleased to take over the Bad Berleburg projects from WestfalenWIND, an experienced developer, and to continue the productive local cooperation as part of these projects.”
She added: “The acquisition is an important milestone for Engie and will almost double our wind capacity in Germany, underlining our growth ambitions in this market.”
She said: “We are determined to expand our presence through repowering projects, greenfield developments and targeted acquisitions to actively drive the energy transition in Germany.”
WestfalenWIND managing director Matthias Rieger said: “It was important for us to find a reliable buyer who will continue the project in the long term and in our spirit.”
He added: “As a company committed to sustainability, Engie remains committed to the successful cooperation with local communities that we initiated.”
He said: “This was and remains essential to ensure local acceptance and long-term benefits for the region.”
Engie said it has a German portfolio of around 450MW of wind, hydro and storage assets either operating or under construction.
The company added it currently operates 52GW of renewable and storage capacity globally and aims to increase this to 95GW by 2030.
