US developer EverPower Wind Holdings is exploring the feasibility of a 40MW wind project in western Maine.
The proponent started collecting wind data from a meteorological tower erected last year on Bryant Mountain in Milton Township.
The company plans to conduct environmental surveys over the next several years.
“The site hosts an excellent wind resource, is only one mile from existing transmission infrastructure that can accommodate the project and is of a size and cost to allow it to compete in today’s competitive energy markets and deliver clean renewable energy into the New England system,” EverPower said in a filing to state regulators.
The developer anticipates applying for a permit in 2019 and starting construction in 2020.
EverPower estimates the project will require a $104m investment, based on a potential layout of 12 3.3MW turbines.
The project area is located in an unorganized territory, which normally undergoes an expedited permitting process. However regulators are considering a petition to remove the township from the expedited process, a move EverPower says will force the company to halt project development.
The Maine Land Use Planning Commission will hold a hearing 10 August.
EverPower is owned by Terra Firma, a private equity firm.
