Fire engulfed a Vestas turbine at Southern Company’s 174MW Salt Fork project in the Texas Panhandle this week.
Wind farm employees contacted first responders after fire broke out at about 5:30pm on 7 June, said Southern spokesperson Schuyler Baehman.
“All plant personnel are safe and accounted for and there were no injuries,” said Baehman.
The project, located in Donley and Gray Counties, comprises 87 V100 2MW turbines.
“A small area of the plant has been taken offline as a preemptive safety measure as we investigate the cause,” said Baehman.
Vestas North America spokesperson Chanté Condit-Pottol told reNEWS: “Vestas is working in close coordination with the project owner Southern Power to investigate the incident.”
Salt Fork started commercial operation in December 2016. The output is sold under separate power purchase agreements to Garland Power & Light and cloud computing company Salesforce.
EDF Renewable Energy developed the project and is providing balance-of-plant O&M services.
