A Vestas V90 MK3 2MW turbine caught fire at the Galgenberg wind farm in southwest Germany on 29 December.
The fire affected the nacelle and parts of the rotor blades on the 100m turbine, located near Losheim am See in Saarland, according to an image posted by the Losheim am See fire brigade.
With the fire starting a 11pm, more than 40 fire fighters, along with police officers, attended the scene, German newspaper BILD reported. The fire burnt out by the next morning.
Municipal defence leader Andreas Brausch, in comments to BILD, noted that wind speeds of 50-60kmph complicated the operation.
According to local firefighters and police, nobody was injured, though debris landed on fields and a nearby road. The L377 road, which runs between Losheim and the town of Rissenthal, was closed on 29 December for several hours as the area was secured.
The exact cause of the fire is still to be determined.
Vestas spokesman Claes Lautrup Cunliffe stated: “All plant personnel are safe and accounted for, the site has been secured, and there were no injuries. Vestas will work with the customer to determine root cause.”
