The first of 76 Siemens 3MW turbines at Vattenfall’s Pen y Cymoedd onshore wind farm in South Wales will be completed next month.
Installation work for the 145-metre tip height turbines at the site between Neath and Aberdare began in January with fitting of tower ‘stumps’.
Each turbine tower section will be lifted into place, followed by the nacelle and then the rotor, which is pre-assembled on the ground before it is lifted into place. “The first ones [are] due for completion in early April,” said Vattenfall in a statement.
The progress of turbine installation at the 228MW site depends on wind conditions – cranes are not permitted to lift the turbine components when strong winds are blowing.
Vattenfall anticipates a crane can complete a turbine installation in around 12 hours if weather conditions are good.
Siemens expects to have completed the turbine installation phase by the end of 2016.
