Crews have erected the first turbine at Enercon’s 230MW FWRN wind project in southwest Ontario, spokesperson Hassan Shahriar told reNEWS.
“The first one is up and is fully mechanically complete,” said Shahriar. “It’s full steam ahead.”
The 124-metre hub height makes it’s one of the tallest turbines in North America, he added.
Enercon’s temporary concrete tower plant located nearby is operating “at maximum output,” said Shahriar.
The factory employs about 200 workers and has produced more than 600 tower segments so far. Each tower consists of about 28 sections.
Borea Construction is building the 77-turbine Niagara region wind farm, which will comprise 66 3MW and 11 2.9MW E101 machines.
Eptcon is installing two project substations and a 44km 115kV transmission line.
Prysmian Group won a €16m contract to supply 25km of 138kV underground cable and 650km of 35kV MV power cables to interconnect the wind farm to Hydro One Networks.
Enercon aims to commission the C$900m to C$950m feed-in tariff project in August 2016.
The German turbine manufacturer has a majority stake in the project. Quebec developer Boralex paid $5m for an option to acquire a 25% interest for C$60m. Under its partnership agreement with Enercon, Boralex is coordinating project construction and will operate the wind farm after the option is exercised.
