The installation of Gamesa G114-2.0MW turbines at the 208MW Amazon US East wind farm in North Carolina has kicked off.
US general contractor Wanzek Construction has been tackling construction at the site for developer Avangrid Renewables since last year. Avangrid was formed by the merger of Iberdrola Renewables and UIL Holdings.
“The site is busy as we continue to pour foundations, we have components arriving on site and we’ve begun turbine erection,” Avangrid spokesman Paul Copleman told reNEWS.
“We lifted the first rotor earlier this week.”
The project, formerly known as Desert Wind, features 104 Gamesa G114s with a 93m tower and 114m rotor diameter.
Amazon Web Services contracted with Avangrid to build and operate the wind farm to supply power for the company’s cloud data centres.
The wind farm will be the first in North Carolina and is located on about 22,000 acres leased from more than 60 local landowners.
“We expect to reach commercial operation by the end of the year,” said Coleman.
