GE has signed service agreements to boost the power output of two aging wind farms in Japan with a combined 52MW.
The two five-year contracts, involving GE´s digital wind farm technology, will benefit Kinden Corporation´s 30MW Shirama wind farm and Kandenko’s 22MW Chosi plant.
The technology is expected to add up to 5% more annual energy production to the Shirama facility and up to 2% additional output to the Chosi plant, according to the US company.
The former started operating in 2009 using 1.5MW GE turbines and the latter opened back in 2004 with similar machines.
At both sites, GE software applications will implement a turbine performance enhancement strategy including adjustments such as the fine tuning of the pitch angle.
The resulting data will help the team analyze current and historical performance as well as help predict the remaining useful life of key components in the machines, GE said.
“Our digital wind farm concept is starting to gain traction all over the world,” GE onshore wind president Anne McEntee said.
“These two projects in Japan are great examples of our lifecycle approach to services-we are using data and analytics to create new value from older machines.”
