GES has won a contract for the construction of a 695MW hybrid solar, wind and battery energy storage park in Chile.
It will be the largest project in the history of the Spanish renewable energy outfit.
GES has been present in Chile since 2013, building 1178MW of wind and photovoltaic projects to date.
The company described the hybrid project as a “world-leading milestone” in technology integration due to its size.
Chief executive José Luis García Donoso said: “This project is strategic for GES; the combination of three renewable technologies in a single facility sets the short-term direction for the sector.
“Furthermore, it will be the facility with the largest storage capacity in Latin America to date. It is an opportunity for us to deploy our engineering and construction expertise fully, reinforcing the role of Spanish companies in high-potential international markets such as Chile.”
GES has not revealed the name of the Chilean project or the company behind it. However, sources close to the operation told reNEWS it is the Pampas project, awarded by AES Andes.
GES will be responsible for the engineering, construction and commissioning of the project.
The award of the contract also coincides with the 400th project executed by GES since its foundation.
It is also in line with GES’s strategy to diversify its activity towards new technologies beyond just wind and solar, with a strong commitment to energy storage.
GES sees Chile as a key market in terms of renewable energy. In just six years, the share of solar and wind energy in the Chilean energy mix has increased tenfold, now accounting for nearly 40% of the installed capacity.
“This project demonstrates that strategic vision, collaboration and commitment to the future are fundamental pillars for driving forward a real energy transition,” said Marta Alonso Pelegrín, commercial director for Latin America at GES.
“We are honoured to be part of an initiative that marks a before and after in the Chilean renewable energy industry, where we position ourselves as a leading engineering and construction company.”
GES is also studying new projects in Romania, Portugal and Central American countries with the aim of expanding its international presence and diversifying its portfolio.
