Chinese turbine maker Goldwind has signed a letter of intent with the Governor of the Brazilian state of Bahia to build a wind turbine factory in the state.
Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues signed the letter of intent with Goldwind representatives which will amount to an investment in the region of R$150m ($29m).
The factory will generate around 1100 direct and indirect jobs.
Following the signing, Rodrigues received representatives from Chinese wind turbine blade manufacturer Sinoma Blade.
Goldwind is also due a visit by Brazil’s President, Lula da Silva, during his trip to China this week, who is accompanied by a delegation from the Government of Bahia.
Rodrigues said: “We are going to take advantage of this opportunity, helping the state to address its energy potential with renewable energy.”
According to the general director of Goldwind Brasil, José Eduardo Teixeira, the wind potential in Bahia is excellent.
He said: “In addition, the state is strategically positioned, with road and port infrastructure.
“The industry is accompanied by a whole cluster [concentration of companies], because logistics are very expensive.
“So, if we manage to bring in all our big suppliers, the product itself becomes much more competitive.”
The deputy director of Goldwind Brasil, Roberto Veiga, also participated in the signing ceremony.
