Exelon company Constellation is to supply electricity to Starbucks stores in Illinois from Enel Green Power’s 185MW Hill Topper wind farm in the US state.
The deal, which will ensure that 340 Starbucks stores operate with 100% renewable energy, is made possible under a separate agreement between Enel and Constellation for 14MW of the output from the wind farm.
Hill Topper is expected to enter into service by the end of the year and will generate about 570 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year.
Enel Green Power North America head Georgios Papadimitriou said: “An increasing number of commercial and industrial customers are choosing renewables as a competitive and clean way to meet their energy needs and they look for customised solutions addressing their specific energy profile.
“The agreement with Constellation is an example of an innovative approach we are taking to meet the needs of these commercial and industrial customers to enable them to achieve their sustainability targets in a cost-effective way.”
Constellation national retail business president Mark Huston said: “Constellation is dedicated to providing clean energy solutions that help our customers meet their environmental goals.
“Starbucks is among the nation’s top purchasers of renewable electricity and it is fitting that they chose Constellation to sustainably power hundreds of their Illinois locations.”
Starbucks director of global environmental impact Rebecca Zimmer said: “It’s exciting to see Starbucks continue its commitment to play a role in the growth of renewable energy markets.
“We are identifying and investing in new green power projects that are close to our retail communities and give our store partners a story they can be proud of.”
