Novartis is to supply 100MW of electricity from its Santa Rita East wind farm in Texas to pharmaceutical company Novartis under a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement.
The agreement will see the power delivered to Electric Reliability Council of Texas and help reduce Novartis’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 220,000 tonnes a year.
Santa Rita East will create up to 300 jobs during construction, and 12-15 permanent jobs once operational in 2019.
Invenergy chief commercial officer Jim Shield said: “We’re excited to partner with Novartis and applaud their commitment to environmentally responsible and economical operations.”
Novartis Business Services head of environment Karen Coyne said: “At Novartis, we take our responsibility toward environmental sustainability very seriously. It is important to our organisation, our associates, patients, investors and society overall.
“This power purchase agreement with Invenergy is in line with our sustainability strategy and is expected to help us reduce our carbon footprint, constrain costs and increase adoption of renewable energy.”
