Acciona has signed 10-year power purchase agreements with Novartis in Spain covering 135MW of solar capacity.
Acciona is building a 125MW plant in Almendralejo, in Badajoz, and an 85.7MW plant in Valencia, both of which will supply Novartis under the two PPAs.
The plants will contribute around 50% of Novartis’ 100% renewable electricity consumption in Europe, promoting its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2025.
The 125MW solar plant is due online in the fourth quarter of 2022, while the Valencian Community plant will be operational in the first quarter of 2023.
Novartis sustainability director Montse Montaner said: “At Novartis, environmental sustainability is aligned with our purpose to reimagine medicine to improve and prolong people’s lives.
“Energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions are the cornerstones of our strategy to reduce emissions.
“We are proud to share the same approach with Acciona and other partners on our path towards environmental sustainability.”
Novartis has also signed a PPA with EDPR for output from a 36MW wind farm and a 26.8MW solar facility, both in Spain, expected to be installed in 2022-2023.
