The International Renewable Energy Agency has joined a new initiative to boost the number of companies committed to sourcing clean energy.
The Corporate Sourcing of Renewables Campaign, launched at the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial meeting in San Francisco, will build partnerships between governments and the private sector.
Campaign partners will deploy enabling policies and resources to help businesses source more renewable energy, the lobby group said.
Irena joins partners including the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, the World Resources Institute and governments such as Germany and Denmark. Companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft are also involved, it said.
“The private sector accounts for roughly 50% of the world’s electricity consumption and so must play a key role in the ongoing global energy transition,” Irena director general Adnan Amin said.
“Switching this demand to renewables will decrease emissions, generate jobs, and deliver a host of other environmental, social, and economic benefits across the globe.”
