The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is seeking inputs from companies to feed into an index of voluntary corporate renewable energy purchasing.
IRENA said the REmade index, which is due out later this year, will be the first global reference index on voluntary corporate renewable energy purchasing for all end-uses.
The index will recognise companies sourcing renewables, highlight latest trends and provide recommendations to accelerate use.
IRENA said initial work on corporate sourcing shows that the drivers for procurement are changing.
“With the business case for renewables firmly established, many companies outside the energy sector are turning to renewable energy, not only out of corporate social responsibility but as a result of sound business decisions based on costs, profitability and security of supply,” it said.
Findings from the corporate survey will be compiled along with results from an already completed survey of IRENA member states.
IRENA said the responses to the member state survey indicate that, while many countries wish to facilitate the voluntary demand for corporate sourcing of renewables and recognise its potential, enabling frameworks do not sufficiently take into account the needs and drivers for companies to invest in renewables.
The REmade Index is being developed in support of an IRENA ministerial campaign to advance the business case for the corporate sourcing of renewables and identify and implement policy recommendations and best practices.
