Portugal expects to increase its wind generation capacity to 8GW or 9GW by 2030, according to the country’s environment minister.
Hitting the goal would mean adding about 3GW of additional capacity, Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes told the WindEurope 2019 conference in Bilbao today.
“This will be achieved by exploring the current potential, but also by means of scaling up existing wind farms and repowering,” he said.
Portugal last year set a target of meeting 80% of its power demand with green energy by 2030 and 100% of 2050.
In the short term, a 25MW floating offshore wind demonstration project called WindFloat Atlantic is expected to come online off the coast of the country by the end of the year.
It is being developed by a group that includes EDPR and Mitsubishi Corporation.
