RWE has begun construction of two 7MW wind turbines between Inden and Düren-Merken in the district of Düren with a total capacity of 14MW.
RWE said commissioning of the Düren-Merken wind farm is planned for the second half of 2026 and that the project is expected to supply around 9,000 households per year with green electricity.
The company stated that it will contribute 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour generated to local municipalities, resulting in annual additional income of up to €65,000.
RWE added that 91MW of new wind capacity is currently under construction in the Rhenish mining area, where it already operates solar and wind projects with a combined capacity of more than 550MW.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “Every wind turbine counts: RWE is consistently driving forward the energy transition in the Rhenish mining area and is continuing to invest in the expansion of renewable energies. Wind energy is a central pillar of electricity generation in this windy region. With these two plants in Düren-Merken alone, we will be able to supply around 9,000 households per year with green electricity after commissioning.”
