RWE has been successful in a EEG tender for 60MW wind farm, which it will start building this month on recultivated areas of an opencast mine with the city of Bedburg, Germany.
With the new Bedburg 3 wind farm, the two partners will then operate a total of 156MW of wind power in the city of Bedburg.
As with the Königshovener Höhe and Bedburg A44n wind farms, the city of Bedburg has a 49% stake in the new wind farm and RWE 51%.
In addition, RWE pays out 0.2 cents to the surrounding municipalities for every kilowatt hour produced.
The annual income of up to €250,000 will benefit the local municipality of Bedburg in particular, but the neighbouring city of Jüchen will also receive a share.
Katja Wünschel, chief executive of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “According to the motto all good things come in threes, I am very pleased that we are quickly realising another wind farm together with the city of Bedburg.
“The common goal of expanding wind energy and using the ideal site conditions on the recultivated area are the basis for our long-standing and trusting cooperation, from which all Bedburgers benefit.”
In April 2025, road construction for the delivery of the large components will begin.
The recultivated subsoil is then improved by means of vibratory tamping compaction.
Construction work on the foundations is planned for the summer.
The nine wind turbines will feed into the public power grid via RWE Power’s existing electrical infrastructure in the Garzweiler opencast mine.
The full commissioning of the last wind turbine of the new wind farm is planned for the second half of 2026.
