RWE Renewables has completed construction of the 28MW Bedburg A 44n onshore wind farm in Germany and has connected it to the grid.
The €30m project is comprised of five wind turbines, totalling 28.5MW, located on recultivated land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine in the city of Bedburg.
RWE owns a majority stake in the wind farm of 51 percent while the city of Bedburg has a 49 percent stake.
The project adds to the German developer’s partnership with the city under which it operates the existing Königshovener Höhe wind farm, which features 21 turbines.
Together, RWE and he city of Bedburg manage a total capacity of 95MW within the city.
Four of the new wind turbines at the Bedburg A 44n wind farm will feed their electricity into the public supply grid via the existing RWE Power
infrastructure at the Garzweiler mine.
The fifth turbine will supply electricity to the modern resource protection settlement Bedburg-Kaster, which is currently under construction, RWE said.
Part of the electricity from this wind turbine supplies the settlement indirectly, sending a portion of its production to an energy storage system, while the rest flows into the general supply grid, the Geran developer added.
RWE Renewables, chief executive officer for onshore wind and solar in Europe and Australia Katja Wünschel said: “North Rhine-Westphalia, and in particular the Rhenish mining area, is one of the focal points of our growth strategy, where we will invest 4 billion euro gross by the end of the decade.
“We want to realise every wind and solar project that is possible.
“To ensure that the energy turnaround succeeds, we also rely on successful partnerships with municipalities.
“We are pleased to be able to successfully commission another wind farm with the city of Bedburg.”
City of Bedburg mayor Sascha Solbach said: “Today is an important day for the city of Bedburg on our way to being CO₂-neutral by 2045.
“In the future, we will continue to support the expansion of renewables, invest in climate protection and set a good example as an energy municipality.”
