Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has discussed cooperation with China’s Sany Group on manufacturing wind turbines in Egypt.
The ministry said the talks examined the Chinese OEM’s model for establishing a wind turbine manufacturing plant and the localisation of its advanced technology, according to a statement.
The meeting followed discussions held last month in Beijing on the company’s plans to enter the Egyptian market and its proposed partnership models for manufacturing equipment and components for solar and wind energy.
The discussions also covered Sany’s wider activities in manufacturing equipment for solar and wind power plants and the support available within the country’s industrial localisation strategy, according to the statement.
The possibility of establishing an additional factory for solar energy equipment was considered alongside the requirements of upcoming renewable energy projects using locally manufactured components.
Esmat said the electricity sector is continuing efforts to support technology transfer for manufacturing solar and wind equipment and stressed the need to build a national industry in this field.
He added that the ministry is open to all partnership models that involve using locally manufactured equipment and noted the state’s broader strategy to localise industry and transfer modern technology.
He highlighted ongoing work to upgrade the unified grid, the status of allocated project land, and progress on integrating solar and wind energy.
He said the sector has taken major steps towards making Egypt a regional energy hub and a centre for electrical equipment manufacturing.
