SSE Renewables welcomed a decision by the Scottish government today granting consent for the repowering of the Tangy wind farm on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland.
The upgrade, called Tangy 4, will see the 22-turbine site reduced to 16 machines, while increasing capacity to up to 80MW from 18.7MW.
Turbine tip height will increase to 149.9 metres from 130 metres previously.
SSE said: “The reduction in turbine numbers reflects the rapid development of wind turbine technology and will allow SSE Renewables to take advantage of much more powerful turbines to maximise the energy generation potential and efficiency of the site.”
Tangy 1&2 has been operating since 2003, the company said.
SSE Renewables will now consider the options for a route to market for the project ahead of taking a final investment decision.
SSE Renewables development project manager Andy Gregory said: “We are delighted to hear that Scottish Minsters have granted consent for Tangy 4 as repowering aging wind farms is fast becoming a key priority in meeting Scotland’s net-zero ambitions.
“This consent will allow us to replace the existing Tangy turbines with fewer, but more efficient, larger-capacity machines, harnessing more of Argyll’s excellent wind resource and making use of the existing infrastructure there.”
