Vestas has been awarded a contract to supply turbines for a 47MW wind farm repowering project in California in the US.
The agreement with Eolus North America is for the delivery of up to 13 of the V126 model with capacities ranging between 3.5MW and 3.8MW for the Wind Wall wind farm near Tehachapi.
Commercial operations will begin in 2020.
Vestas will also service the turbines for 10 years.
Eolus North America has a 60% membership interest in Wind Wall Development, which owns the rights to the Wind Wall 1 project.
“The new wind farm will produce over three times the electricity than the almost 400 old turbines that it will replace,” said Eolus chief executive Per Witalisson.
He added: “This is a fantastic illustration of the technological development of the wind industry in just three decades.”
Through a subsidiary Eolus North America has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Amazon Web Services, part of the online retailer, to support the construction and operation of Wind Wall 1. This wind farm is expected to generate enough energy to power up to 14,000 U.S. homes in a year.
Eolus North America country manager Hans-Christian Schulze said: “To bring new life into one of California’s first commercial wind farms that was constructed using Vestas technology, about 35 years ago, is thrilling and a great achievement for our team.”
Wind Wall 1 is the second Vestas wind farm that Eolus has developed that will power Amazon Web Service’s global infrastructure with renewable energy.
The Backhammar wind farm in Sweden that Eolus currently is constructing for KGAL is also covered by a power purchase agreement with Amazon.
