Windar Photonics has installed and tested one of its WindVision lidar units on an Eleon 3.4M-118 turbine at the new-build 100MW Aidu wind farm in northeastern Estonia.
The Danish company has also received two orders for three WindVision units from what it said are “two top 10 wind turbine OEMs”.
The €216m Aidu wind farm, which is fully permitted, will consist of 30 3.4M-118 units and is scheduled to be completed by 2018.
Windar said the installation is the first direct integration between a lidar wind sensor and the control system of a wind turbine at the design stage.
It added that the lidar will provide operational data by measuring wind speed and direction before the wind reaches the turbine, helping to minimise and reduce potentially damaging loads, while improving turbine performance during normal conditions.
Windar has worked with Eleon since 2013.
The other two orders focus on wind turbine optimisation, Windar said.
